Berkshire Hills Music Academy

auntitled

BHMA strives to create a world in which all people with intellectual disabilities are encouraged to pursue their talents, enjoy a high quality of life, and find meaningful employment.

 Our Mission

BHMA uses music to help individuals with intellectual disabilities develop skills for communication, independence, and employment. We do this by:

 • Integrating music programming through a comprehensive curriculum that engages the entire brain.

• Empowering students to advocate for themselves effectively through productive communication and   interaction with peers.

• Teaching pre-vocational and vocational skills within a community setting, with job-related support for  successful employment.

• Encouraging students to achieve increasing levels of independence through involvement in the local  community.

 Why Music?

Studies show music engagement uniquely stimulates all areas of the brain, promoting significant opportunity for enhanced learning and retention.  Through our music infused atmosphere, music lessons, ensemble participation, rehearsals and performances, our students move toward:

 • Increased cognitive functioning – focus and attention
• Improved communication skills – language organization and retrieval
• Improved physical abilities – sense of self in space and organized muscle responses
• Improved social skills – team work, problem solving, and self-advocacy
